Research Problem(s) Studied
I chose interviews because they allow us to have in-depth conversations with students. Interviews let us ask follow-up questions and get more detailed answers about their experiences and preferences. This method will better understand what stops students from using CAPS and what services they would like to see offered.
Qualitative Interview with 3-6 Students from IU Fort Wayne

Research Instrument

-
What are the main challenges you face with mental health as a student at IU Indianapolis?
-
Have you used CAPS services before? If yes, how was your experience? If no, what kept you from trying them?
-
How much do you know about the mental health services CAPS offers?
-
Would you prefer to use virtual counseling services instead of in-person ones? Why or why not?
-
What would encourage you to use CAPS or another mental health service on campus?
-
How important is privacy to you when seeking mental health support?
-
Is there any program or service you think CAPS should offer that they don’t already?
-
What can CAPS do to better meet the mental health needs of students like you?
Part Two
I interviewed five students from IU Indianapolis: three undergraduates and two graduate students, ages 19-26. All of them mentioned feeling stressed or anxious during finals. Four of them had heard about CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services), but only two had used it before. When I asked about the new wellness program I am creating, all of them were interested, especially in mindfulness meditation and art therapy. They also wanted a mix of in-person and online options.

I learned that even though students know about CAPS, most do not use it. This could be because they do not know about all the services or feel awkward about asking for help. However, they really liked the idea of a program that helps them manage stress during finals. Art therapy was a big hit, and students also liked the idea of having flexible options like virtual sessions to fit their busy schedules.
The feedback will change how I promote the program. Since many students do not know much about CAPS, I will focus on spreading the word more, using social media, emails, and student groups to reach everyone. I will also promote art therapy more since it is what caught students’ attention the most. To help students feel comfortable seeking help, I will focus on making the program seem private and supportive, showing that it is okay to seek help when they need it.
